Being able to breathe inside your home is important – and so is being comfortable. If you are constantly sick from pollutants, how can you be comfortable? Here are five ways to improve indoor air quality to breathe easy at home.

  1. Install an air purifier. Certain air purifiers can work wonders when it comes to filtering out many of the common indoor air pollutants. Some filters are powerful enough to stop carcinogenic particulates, like benzene and other volatile organic compounds. Other purifiers have the ability to eradicate mold spores and bacteria.
  2. Purchase houseplants. When NASA was trying to find a way to make the air inside their spaceships cleaner – free from many of the pollutants that jet fuel can put in the air – they went for an unlikely solution: houseplants. Indeed, houseplants have the ability to absorb and remove many indoor air pollutants. Plus, different plants may remove very specific pollutants, like formaldehyde. Other houseplants, like hanging vines, can absorb traces of carbon monoxide, which will make the air in your home much cleaner to breathe.
  3. Clean regularly. It is also vitally imperative that you clean regularly. Most importantly, you want to dust. Dust contains many different particulates, from pet dander to particles that settle from the exhaust of cars. If you live near a busy thoroughfare, you may notice trace amounts of black dust. This is why you want to reach high and low to make sure your home is free of dust. Not only that, but you want to remove clutter that could attract dust. In addition, you want to vacuum on a weekly basis to remove other pollutants that may lower the quality of the air inside your home.
  4. Hire a duct cleaner. Your ductwork can actually be a hidden source of air pollutants. Dust, dander, and even mold spores can rest on the bottom of your ductwork. When you finally go to turn on your air conditioner or heater, the air will blow the pollutants throughout your home. When it comes down to it, you can easily find a ductwork cleaner in your community that can flush out these pollutants.
  5. Take your pets to the groomer. Pets can not only be a source of dander, but they can also track in pollen and outdoor pollutants. This is why you want to bring them to the groomer on a semi-regular basis. Not only will they be happier to be cleaner, but you will also be a lot more open to them sleeping in the same house as you. In the end, you’ll also be able to breathe easier.
