If you’re someone who has carpeted flooring in one or all of the rooms of your house, then you already know all of the benefits that come with having it. Not only can it make your home look and feel comfortable but it also provides insulation for your floors and can help to protect your children or pets should they accidentally fall.
And so, for all of these reasons and more, it’s important that you do all that you can in order to keep your carpets clean and well-kept so that you can extend the life of them for years to come. If you’d like some suggestions on how you can do that, we’ve provided you with five of them below:
Wear no shoes in the house. There’s nothing that brings in more dirt, dust and debris than our shoes. And if you happen to continually walk over your carpet in them, over time, your carpet is going to get extremely dirty. So, in order to keep the traffic down to a minimum, establish a “no shoes” rule. Encourage the people in your house take them off as soon as they walk inside and leave them by the door or to take them off and immediately take them to their room.
Use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. One tool that you’re definitely going to need in order to maintain your carpets on a consistent basis is a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. Not only are they extremely versatile and have great suction capabilities, but you can use them to remove dry and wet stains from your carpeted floors as well.
Put down some carpet runners. No matter how much you do to keep your carpets clean, if you have children and pets, you are sure to end up with some kind of traffic on them. That’s why something else that you should do is put down some carpet runners, especially in the hallways of your home. Based on the kind that you get, they can add a classy touch to your house, plus they are very easy to clean and maintain.
Get stains up immediately. In life, accidents happen. So, if you do happen to spill something on your carpets, it’s important to get it up as soon as possible. Based on the kinds of stains that you have, it will require a customized kind of treatment. For instance, if it’s a water-soluble stain like alcohol, berries or mud, ¼ teaspoon of non-bleach detergent mixed with 32-ounces of water should get it up. If it’s a more stubborn stain like coffee, chocolate or blood, a tablespoon of ammonia mixed with a cup of water should do the trick.
Use great cleaning products. Although there are carpet cleaning companies like Chem-Dry that can give you great carpet care tips, being that many companies tend to use harsh chemicals that come with fumes, we recommend that you do your research before selecting what you want to clean your own carpets with. One website that provides a lot of good information on natural carpet cleaning alternatives is Wiki How. Just go to the site and put “homemade carpet cleaning solutions” in the search field. Good luck!
