5 Signs of Mold Infestation in Your Home

Mold can be dangerous. Some strains of mold can even be deadly. When it comes down to it, being able to spot the mold before it turns into an infestation is the best way to prevent serious health complications and damage to your home. Mold can become so bad that it can start to eat away at your home’s walls, insulation and even foundation. If you don’t want to spend a fortune on mold abatement, there are a number of things that you can look out for that can save you time and money. Not only that, but you also want to protect your home. Here are five signs of mold infestation.

  1. A strange smell. If you start to smell something strange in a room of your home, or if you start to notice something pungent emanating from one of your walls, there is a good chance that you have a mold infestation. The smell is usually sour, wet and mildewy. At times, mold can smell just like wet laundry. If you smell this odor in your closets, shower, attic or basement – you may have a mold problem on your hands.
  2. More moisture than usual. If you start to feel the air getting heavier with humidity in a specific room in your home, especially the attic or the basement, there is a good chance that you have mold. If the humidity has been stagnate, mold could have already started to proliferate. What you should do is open all the windows and turn on the lights. If you don’t notice any mold, you may want to have a specialist come in to detect for mold inside the walls. Just because you can’t see it – it doesn’t mean that it isn’t there.
  3. Health issues. When the Lincoln military housing mold infestation broke out, people were complaining about a lot of health conditions. Some of the health conditions are relatively mild, but some can be a lot more severe. For instance, if you are feeling flu-like symptoms, conjunctivitis, muscle pain and other aches and pains – these are all classic mold poisoning symptoms. If you go to the doctor and your blood tests come back positive for mold, you probably have a mold infestation in your home.
  4. Structural problems with your home. If you are noticing off colored walls, water stains, chipped or peeling paint, or even rotting wood, there is a good chance that you have a mold infestation. In this instance, the mold is probably behind the walls, which means that you have to probably tear down the wall to remove it. You can usually search for mold abatement services in your local listings.
  5. Visible signs. Some mold you can see very easily. Mold in your home looks much the same way that mold looks on an old sandwich. The mold will either be green or brown, but if you have toxic mold – of the stachybotrys chartarum genus – the mold will be pitch black and will be speckled. If you notice this type of mold, you need to have it removed immediately.
